Galileo Research Facts No. 148: Can Galileo Therapy improve muscle function and gait parameters in Spina Bifida patients?

This study of the group of Prof. Schoenau at the University of Cologne (“Cologne Concept”) investigated the effects of Galileo Therapy on contractures, muscle function and gait parameters in Spina Bifida (open spine at birth) patients (Cologne Concept: 3×3 minutes, 10 session/week, patient individual exercises).

The results showed that Galileo Therapy could not only significantly decrease the extent of contractures (#GRFS15) ) but also significant improvements in standing (GMFM Dimension E) by +20%, in walking (GMFM Dimension D) by +36% and in gait velocity by +50%. These positive results could be preserved in parts in the following 6 months without Galileo but with individual standard therapy. This fact suggests that Galileo Therapy over periods much longer than 6 months would be more effective to further increase as well as to stabilize improvements.

Also, it needs to be mentioned that in these cases the optimum Galileo Therapy effects can be achieved when Galileo Therapy is incorporated into a complete therapy concept which allows to transfer improvements generated by Galileo into every-day movements.
